The ALBERTINA Museum is mounting its first-ever exhibition on the theme of dance photography, with works drawn entirely from the museum’s own extensive collection. These photographs show how expression, rhythm, and motion were transformed into fascinating images. The spectrum ranges from 1860s ballet portraits to snapshots of free dance from around 1900 and on to avant-garde photography of the 1920s and ’30s. A special emphasis will be placed here on Vienna, where the initial years of the 20th century saw a lively independent scene redefine dance as an art form.
The 260-page catalogue accompanies the exhibition, featuring texts by Astrid Mahler.
