Brigitte Kowanz. light is what we see.

Light enables us to see. It makes everything visible yet remains invisible itself. Brigitte Kowanz (1957–2022) examines this paradox in her art. Using mirrors, black light, neon tubes, and glass bottles, she creates objects and installations in which she stages light. The 240-page catalogue accompanying the retrospective at the ALBERTINA guides viewers through works created by this important artist since the 1980s. “What is light?” is the central question ofher oeuvre. “Light is what we see” is the artist’s answer.
