Istanbul, Ankara, Paris, and New York are the cities that mark Burhan Doğançay (1929–2013). His drawings, gouaches, collages, and fumages reproduce information signs and numbers on the walls and also show extracts of advertisement and event posters, and graffiti. For Doğançay, they are mirrors of society as they document zeitgeist and the current political climate respectively. He elaborated these works into his calligraphic series of more abstract ribbons from the 1970s on.
